What is this all about?

We’re hearing a lot about what the ancient Maya prophesied for us, far in their future…

…our year 2012.

The din is rising.

What did they actually tell us?

The short answer from the Maya is, It’s not the end of the world!

Indeed, current debate about 21 December 2012 results from contemporary confusion from projections, assumptions, and misunderstanding about the science and beliefs of several ancient cultures of the Americas.

The Maya were one of many cultures of the Americas who employed a solar calendar of 365 days. However, while the Maya esteemed cycles of about 20 years, 400 years and 5125 years, other cultures focused on shorter cycles. For example, the Aztecs considered the most important long cycles to be 52 years and 676 years.

Although the Aztec adopted many aspects of the Maya calendar, the milestone of 21

December 2012 is significant only in terms of the long cycles of Maya time.1

The Maya Long Count notation for 21 December 2012 is 13.0.0.0.0, which completes a cycle of 13 Pik (also known as 13 Bak’tun), which equals 5125.366 years (3114 BCE/BC – 2012 CE/AD).

More later about the Maya. Let’s first examine current prophecies for 21 December 2012.

Some of the events proposed to come together on the winter solstice, 21 December 2012:

• On that morning, the Earth and Sun will align with the “Dark Rift” near the Galactic Center. This event last happened about 25,800 years ago.

• The magnetic poles of the Earth may reverse, leaving us unprotected from cosmic radiation for a time. The effect of magnetic fields on human creativity, initiative, mood, etc., is still unknown.

• There will be a Venus Transit, an eclipse-type alignment when Venus crosses between

Earth and the Sun. We witness a pair of these about once a century: the last few were 1518 &

1526; 1631 & 1639; 1761 & 1769; 1874 & 1882; 2004 & then on 6 June 2012.

• NASA predicts an unusually powerful “Solar Maximum” (sunspot season) for 2012

(though it may peak as early as late 2011). This happens every 11 years, and disrupts satellite and other electromagnetic communications.

• The usual disasters loom: food shortages, cataclysmic storms due to global warming,

gasoline prices going through the roof, looming chaos in the Middle East —site of Biblical

Armageddon and Eden— which will disrupt oil production and bring civilization to a grinding halt (some like to call it Mess-o’-potamia).

• According to ancient records, the Maya Long Count Calendar will reach 13.0.0.0.0. Due to the cyclic nature of Maya calendars, this date replicates the date at the beginning of this Creation in August 3114 BC/BCE (which the Maya also wrote as 13.0.0.0.0). The interval is 5125 years & 133 days, or 5125.366 years.

• There have been five Creations according to Aztec records. Five times 5125.366 years is 25,626.8 years. Coincidence?

• The return of Quetzalcoatl (one of the great gods of ancient Mesoamerica), according to Aztec and Maya prophecies.

• The “13” in the Maya date 13.0.0.0.0 indicates “13 Bak’tuns.” A Maya Bak’tun or Pik is

144,000 days, the same number as the number of devotees taken up in the Rapture, according to the Book of Revelation. Coincidence?

What is supposed to happen in 2012?

Nine Reasons why the “Maya Prophecies”

should be read very critically:

1. Very fragmentary. What we have is only a handful of passages from a lost, and much

longer, story.

2. Contradictory. Though Aztec, Mixtec, and Maya sources provide us a number of narratives, different versions disagree. The calendar dates associated with Maya “end date”, Aztec “end date”, and “return of Quetzalcoatl” all vary.

For example: the Aztec predict that this Creation will end on a 4-Movement day in a 2-Reed year, if it ends at all. The next possible Aztec end-date will come in 2027. On the other hand, Maya literature does not explicitly predict any end at all, and its so-called “end date” in 2012 is a 4-Ajaw (4-Flower in the Aztec cycle), not 4-Movement. Mixtec Creation stories mention the day 2-Deer in year 13-Rabbit.

There are many other dates.

3. Manipulated. Tlacaélel, Machiavellian minister to three Aztec emperors, had no illusions about the power of historical propaganda, and saw to it that history was rewritten completely to exalt the Mexica and denigrate rivals. He was neither the first nor the last to do this. At his behest, the Aztecs burned their own libraries as well as their enemies’, in order to start with a clean slate. They even changed Quetzalcoatl’s birthday. Likewise, Maya historical dates and intervals of time were manipulated for their numerological and augural significance.

4. Misunderstood. 21st-century Western world-view is very different from that of ancient

Mesoamericans. We tend to project our own ideas and beliefs on others.

For example: Ancient Maya distinctions between truth and myth, and between various individual gods, were nowhere near our categorical boundaries. Their gods did not have as distinct personalities, joining, blending into each other, or splitting into gangs of 4 or 5. The days, and even the numerals in their calendars were living, powerful entities. Some Maya texts appear to have indicated “myth time” with “unworkable” calendar days. (See pp. 74ff below.)

5. Errors. Many, many Maya monuments contain errors, both of transcription and of

calculation, most noticeably in dates and distance numbers. A quick survey counts over 50

numerical mistakes carved in stone. Apparently the Maya, believed that “a card laid is a card played” and never, ever, erased or corrected a mistake. (For an example, see pp. 51-52.)

6. No mention of destruction, nor of renewal, nor improvement, connected to the coming

13.0.0.0.0 Maya “end date”. The so-called “end-time prophecies” are all modern conjecture.

7. Maya monumental texts contain many implications that they expected Life and the

calendar to continue without interruption, far beyond 2012.

8. The Mesoamerican concept of “cyclic time” is not that cyclic. To both the Maya and the Aztec each Creation was an improvement on the previous era.

9. The Classic Maya considered Solstices to be of very minor importance. Though they record hundreds of ceremonies, anniversaries, jubilees, dedications, offerings, astronomical events, etc., Maya inscriptions almost never mention events on solstices or equinoxes. However, especially very early, during the Middle Formative, the Maya did build “E-Groups”,architectural alignments to the Solstices and Equinoxes.

This is the Catherwood's philosphy of travel and the paragraph that describes it as it is:

I saw unexpectedly a spectacle of such extraordinary beauty, that I sent the servant back to tell Mr. Catherwood to come to me forthwith, if he had to be carried in his hammock. It was a large cavern or grotto, with a roof of broken, overhanging rock, high enough to give an air of wildness and grandeur, impenetrable at midday to the sun’s rays, and at the bottom water pure as crystal, still and deep, resting upon a bed of white limestone rock. It was the very creation of romance; a bathing-place for Diana and her nymphs. Grecian poet never imagined so beautiful a scene. It was almost a profanation, but in a few minutes we were swimming around the rocky basin with feelings of boyish exultation, only regretting that such a freak of nature was played where so few could enjoy its beauties. On a nobleman’s estate in England it would be above all price. The bath reinvigorated our frames. It was after dark when we returned; hammocks were waiting for us, and very soon we were in a profound sleep.

The Yucatán Peninsula is the cradle of one of history’s most fascinating civilizations: the Maya. December 2012 marks the beginning of a major new Maya calendar cycle; its initial date is repeating for the first time in 5125 years.

In the course of more than 2000 years, the descendants of the pre-Hispanic Maya world have preserved some degree of its knowledge. Nevertheless, the majority of Maya culture remains inaccessible to us, despite intense dedication on the part of archaeologists, ethnologists and other specialists in anthropology working over the course of more than 200 years. Even though the Maya calendar was indeed one of the first elements to be studied, much still remains to be understood about the meaning of its most significant dates.

The Mayas’ ample astronomic knowledge as well as their observations and calculations for the prediction of eclipses is well known thanks to texts recorded in stone as well as the four known Maya codices. Their knowledge of relationships between the planets allowed their calculations to cover thousands of years, both past and future. The Maya maintained a relationship with the universe that modern humankind has lost—almost no one gazes at the heavens anymore.

The most important Maya calendar date in modern times correspond to 21 or 23 December—depending on the which correlation one favors—at which time a 5125-solar-year cycle ends and another cycle, 13 Katun, begins.

What does the date mean in relation to the Maya calendar? Why is it so important? The end (or death) of a cycle represents the occasion of its re-birth. The end of a significant cycle makes way for great renewal.

As well, dates that end in zero are particularly significant in Maya cosmogony. The more zeros in a date, the greater its importance. The date in question that corresponds to December 2012 ends in fours zeros.

Dates that contained the number thirteen were considered special occasions. They alluded to the thirteen Bolontikú deities, also known as the Lords of the Night (los Señores de la Noche).

Reflections

We can imagine that in those months leading up to major cycle changes, the Maya prepared elaborate celebrations. So what about us? How may we be able to interpret this particular cycle change? Can it have a meaning in our own time-measuring systems?

Internadas en las selvas de la Península de Yucatán, y ocultas bajo la espesa maleza, se encuentra una serie de oquedades que dan acceso a un universo alterno, las cavernas sumergidas llamadas cenotes por los antiguos mayas. Estos enormes sistemas de cavernas, representaron para la antigua civilización que vivió cerca de ellos, los asientos de la creación, el lugar de donde surgió la vida y el sitio de donde provinieron los primeros alimentos colocados ahí por los dioses, como un regalo para las criaturas humanas de las cuales esperaban a cambio, la obligación de ofrendarles periódicamente el alimento del cual se alimentaban los seres divinos: la sangre del hombre. Durante más de 3 décadas me he dedicado a bucear y los últimos 28 años lo he hecho de manera profesional. Mi especialidad es el buceo en cuevas, actividad de la cual soy instructor desde el año de 1987, siendo el primer mexicano en obtener ese grado. La primera vez que tuve el privilegio de bucear en uno de estos maravillosos sistemas – hace unos 27 años – tuve un encuentro que cambio mi vida. En el fondo del cenote y semi oculto en un pequeño nicho, se encontraba un cráneo humano. En ese momento me hice mil preguntas que se agolpaban en mi mente de manera confusa: quien había sido este personaje? Porque estaba ahí, en el obscuro fondo de un cenote? Era joven cuando murió? Era hombre o mujer? Habría estado enfermo en el momento de su muerte? Lo mataron? Llego ahí como producto de un sacrificio? Sufrió en el proceso de muerte? En ese momento supe a que quería dedicar mi vida, y años después me convertí en bio arqueólogo. La bio - arqueología es una disciplina paradójica, ya que se encarga de estudiar como fue la vida de los individuos del pasado a través de estudiar los restos que produce el proceso de la muerte. El bio arqueólogo es un especialista que combina especialidades relacionadas con la antropología forense, la osteología y desde luego la disciplina que la rige: la arqueología. Mi especialidad dentro de la bio arqueología es la que se relaciona con el depósito de seres humanos, partes de estos, o bien de huesos, en las cuevas y cenotes. Actualmente soy Profesor Investigador de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán en donde tengo bajo mi responsabilidad, el área de arqueología subacuática.

Cuando decidí enfrentar este reto sabía que no sería tarea fácil, ya que no existía en ese momento ningún antecedente en relación a esta actividad. Fue por eso que me di a la tarea de buscar información en las más diversas fuentes teniendo la suerte de encontrarme con una serie de documentos históricos procedentes del Siglo XVI, relativos a la persecución de la idolatría, como llamó a esta campaña el artífice de la cacería de sacerdotes mayas: el célebre Fray Diego de Landa. Debido a la naturaleza informativa de los documentos, - ya que se redactaron como informes para el Rey Felipe II - estos contenían abundante y detallada información en relación a la actividad de sacrificio humano, que de acuerdo a estos manuscritos, se seguía practicando aun cuando los españoles ya habían iniciado el proceso de colonización. De esta manera entendí de manera directa, que el sacrificio humano asociado a cenotes fue una práctica cultural con una prolongada duración en Yucatán, que habría tenido orígenes muy tempranos y que obedecía a un sistema de pensamiento ancestral y perfectamente articulado, lo que le permitió seguir existiendo hasta esa época tan tardia. En los documentos se registran diferentes formas de sacrificios rituales en esos cuerpos de agua característicos del norte de la península de Yucatán. Es interesante que en 93% de los sacrificios mencionados se realizó la extracción del corazón y que el 79% de las victimas producto de ese tipo de sacrifico se depositó en algún cenote. En esos documentos se mencionan víctimas predominantemente entre los 6 y los 12 años, así como adultos masculinos jóvenes. En dichos archivos, se menciona repetidamente la utilización de un importante cenote, el que las crónicas describen como “un cenote en Chichen Itzá”. Indudablemente se trataba del que nosotros conocemos en la actualidad como el Cenote Sagrado.

EL CENOTE SAGRADO, “LA MADRE” DE TODOS LOS CENOTES.

Muy temprano en mi investigación, me di cuenta que resultaba indispensable conocer de la mejor manera posible los procesos que se dieron en torno al más importante cenote arqueológico: el mítico Cenote de los Sacrificios de Chichen Itzá. Al estudiar las fuentes históricas que mencionaban que el cenote de Chichen Itza era utilizado aun en épocas tan tardías entendí que debía tratar de encontrar una corroboración arqueológica a todos aquellos testimonios. Era inevitable adentrarse en el estudio del Cenote Sagrado. Aquel que nos remitía a las escenas de fastuosos sacrificios en los que eran arrojadas las más bellas doncellas ricamente ataviadas. “Eran enviadas vivas” decían las crónicas, en espera de una respuesta favorable de los dioses a los que eran ofrendadas. Sin embargo, estábamos cerca de descifrar una historia muy diferente.

Los primeros intentos por desentrañar los secretos que yacían en el fondo de este increíble cenote, los llevo a cabo el explorador Desire Charnay quien no tuvo éxito en su intento. Posteriormente, y después de adquirir la hacienda de Chichen Itzá, con sitio arqueológico y cenote incluido, el famoso Edward Thompson, se lleva la primera muestra de materiales del fondo del cenote. Este controversial personaje, cónsul de los Estados Unidos en Mérida e incansable buscador de la civilización pérdida de la Atlántida - una especie de Indiana Jones de principios del siglo XX - realiza además, en compañía de un buceador de esponjas griego, la hazaña de bucear con equipo de escafandra el fondo del Cenote Sagrado, convirtiéndose en los primeros humanos en bucear un cenote. Obviamente el equipo de buceo de esa época, era menos que adecuado para las condiciones de los cenotes, específicamente, del célebre pozo de los Itzaes. Entre los “tesoros” que Thompson logra extraer, se encontraba una importante colección de huesos humanos, 124 en total, nos enteraríamos 95 años después, y que fueron transportados a los Estados Unidos, al Museo Peabody de la Universidad de Harvard. Posteriormente, y ya en la década de los 60, una expedición mexicana dirigida por el arqueólogo Román Piña Chan decide intentar desentrañar los todavía numerosos secretos contenidos en el fondo del cenote. El arqueólogo Piña, logra extraer una importante cantidad de artefactos, aunados a una nueva e importante colección de segmentos óseos, estos fueron puestos bajo la custodia de la Dirección de Antropología Física del INAH. en donde permanecieron bien custodiados y en perfecto estado de conservación por casi 50 años.

Años después de que la expedición mexicana extrajera una nueva colección de huesos del Cenote Sagrado y que estos fueran llevados a la Ciudad de México, sumergido en las aguas de aquel primer cenote, jamás pasó ni remotamente por mi mente, que la vida me concedería un segundo e importante privilegio profesional. Muchas de las preguntas que me hacía en aquella memorable primera buceada, serian nuevamente formuladas en los sótanos del hermoso museo de Antropología de la Ciudad de México, ante la mesa del laboratorio de la Dirección de Antropología Física del INAH. Tenía ante mí, de nuevo, un cráneo humano que parecía mirarme expectante, provenía del fondo del Pozo Sagrado de los Itzaes, y en el que nuevamente buscaba ansiosamente, respuestas a una multitud de preguntas.

El día de hoy nos aventuramos a dos sitios arqueológicos muy impresionantes y poco conocidos, y cerramos con una comida en la hacienda Nanche Ha.

Kanki

Unos 16 kilómetros al sureste del poblado de Tenabo, se halla, enclavado en plena selva, este sitio arqueológico de arquitectura monumental de estilo Puuc temprano. Fue ocupado durante la segunda mitad del siglo I d.C. Los mayas aprovecharon un grupo de cerros adyacentes para erigir el centro de la ciudad, a cuyo alrededor se extendían, al parecer, tierras de cultivo. El Grupo Central está compuesto por diez patios intercomunicados dispuestos en varios niveles, y numerosos chultunes (cisternas).

Quizás la estructura más importante de Kanki sitio sea el Palacio, donde dos niveles con columnas con capitel forman entre ocho y diez accesos a dos aposentos separados por una amplia escalinata central. Prevalecen vestigios de grecas, mascarones de Chaac y frisos adornados con relieves rectangulares. Otros grupos de Kanki son el Geco, de siete edificios de los que cuatro forman un pequeño patio, y el del Sapito o Cacabbeec, de cinco edificios de donde se rescataron dos dinteles ricamente labrados. Son de gran interés también la estructura de la Bóveda de Escalera Invertida y el Conjunto de las Columnas.

Acanmul

A 25 km noreste de la ciudad de Campeche está este antiguo asentamiento maya cuya zona estudiada abarca apenas unos dos kilómetros cuadrados. Es el sitio más próximo a la actual capital del Estado. Tuvo su época de esplendor entre los siglos VII y IX d. C. El complejo edificio denominado El Palacio es tal vez el más importante de la región explorada.

Dos haciendas aledañas utilizaron piedras de Acanmul en su construcción: Yaxcab y Nache Há. En esta última concluimos nuestra expedición con una comida al estilo Catherwood.

Hacienda Nache Há, sitio privado Catherwood

Como muchas de las haciendas más antiguas de la región, la de Nache Há nació como hacienda ganadera. Cinco renombrados arquitectos yucatecos realizaron aquí un proyecto que ubica las áreas comunes en los edificios originales y agrega tres habitaciones con jardín propio, terraza y alberca. En la hacienda pervive la antigua iglesia de bóveda de cañón. Una gran alberca en forma de herradura circunda la terraza donde nos espera una comida al estilo Catherwood.

Xpicob, campamento tortuguero

En Xpicob los prodigios de la naturaleza se revelan en la quietud de un rústico entorno donde el biólogo Miguel Medina García es guardián, anfitrión y guía. Se trata de un sencillo campamento “tortuguero” que ofrece experiencias extraordinarias, a sólo 20 minutos de la ciudad de Campeche.

Después de desayunar, nos trasladamos al campamento Xpicob en donde nos espera su director, el biólogo Miguel Medina García, nuestro anfitrión y guía.

El día nos depara una estrecha convivencia con las variadas especies, algunas muy raras, que resguardan las piletas del acuario, con las explicaciones de Miguel Medina, creador del proyecto y protector de las tortugas marinas. Podemos observar con esnórkel cientos de distintas especies de peces en su hábitat, en el área rocosa de Punta Xpicob o en el arrecife artificial. Si bien el principal atractivo diurno del campamento es la cría de tortugas y la observación de especies marinas con la guía de Miguel Medina, un paseo por la bahía en kayak complementa gratamente la visita. En el Bajo, un banco de arena que forma una especie de estanque en el mar, podemos nadar, relajarnos e incluso meditar, tal es la quietud de sus aguas. O podemos también tomar el sol a la orilla del mar disfrutando una rica botana de verduras y frutas de la región, mientras los niños participan en el taller de pintura o enhebran collares a base de conchuelas recogidas en la playa. Para refrescarnos, llevamos agua embotellada, refrescos enlatados, vino y cerveza. Para comer, sándwiches gourmet.

En temporada, Miguel Medina nos permite participar en la liberación de las crías de tortuga: una experiencia inolvidable. Xpicob es famoso también por sus memorables puestas de sol. Una vez que se extinguen los últimos resplandores del día, dejamos la quietud de este paraíso natural.

Now, more than ever, it is time to support these ideas, that without a doubt can make the world a better place. The brochure is about the Yucatan Peninsula, but it really can be applied worldwide.

"By making responsible travel choices, you can have the fabulous Mexican vacation that you've dreamed of, while ensuring that your dollars are benefiting the environment, the local people, and the World Heritage sites od the Yucatan Peninsula.

WHAT IS RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL? Responsible travel is to travel with a purpose. When visiting Yucatan World Heritage Sites, chose local tour operators and engage in activities that protect the environment and benefit the local communities.

Anyone can be a responsible traveler! You can experience the amazing Yucatan World Heritage sites without creating negative impacts so that these sites can be experiences by future generations.

WHAT IS WORLD HERITAGE? World Heritage sites represent the most outstanding and valuable places in the world. They are home to unique ecosystems, remarkable cultures and historic treasures. The 800-plus World Heritage sites around the globe are protected under the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention, which more than 180 countries have signed.

World Heritage sites in the Yucatan Peninsula are rich in cultural and historical importance. Throughout the region, there are numerous historical Mayan sites that provide a window into more than a thousand years of history from ancient ruins to today's indigenous communities.

Yucatan World Heritage sites are also home to many plant and animal species that are native and endemic to this region. For example, Sian Ka'an provides habitat to nearly 350 species of birds, over 40 species of amphibians and reptiles, and over 50 species of fish.

What you can do when you visit Yucatan World Heritage Sites

By considering your travel choices, you can have a unique trip and avoid leaving negative impacts on the people, economies and the environment within and surrounding Yucatan World Heritage sites.

Here are some sustainable travel tips to follow while on your vacation:

Buy local. Choose and support locally owned businesses such as local transportation companies and tour operators. Buy locally made art, handicrafts and souvenirs. Ask directly from the artisans and not middlemen.

Hire local guides. Enrich your experience and support the local economy. Select guides that are recommended by tour operators and hotels. Many of them are experts in Mayan history and the native and endemic flora and fauna of the region.

Engage in local culture. Eat in local restaurants, shop in local markets and attend local festivities/events.

World Heritage site conservation. Always follow designated trails. Respect signs and site caretakers. Never take any archaeological remains, flora or fauna from the site as souvenirs.

Environment. Respect the natural environment. Never buy products made from protected animals, touch or harass animals. Support conservation by paying entrance fees to World Heritage Sites. Reduce, recycle and reuse.

At the hotel. Ask about environmental policies and practices. Talk with the staff about working conditions. Does the hotel support community projects?

Language. Learn a few words of the local language and use them. Here are some examples of Mayan phrases: Bix ah Beel? How are you? (How is your path?) Yum/Dios Bootix Thank you (May God pay you)

Behavior. Be respectful of local citizens' privacy. Ask permission before entering sacred places, homes or private land.

Photos. Be sensitive to when and where you take photos/video of people. The Yucatan is filled with amazing photo opportunities. Please ask people before you take their photo.

Pay the fair price. Don't engage in overly aggressive bargaining for souvenirs. Don't short-change on tips for services. Your fair economic contributions are important to local prosperity."

Cosmos Maya, escapada de fin de semana

Visitar Yucatán para explorar el cosmos maya representa una oportunidad de abrir una ventana a un universo diferente, con su gente, sus dioses y el arte en que se manifiesta la conexión entre éstos. Únase a Catherwood Travels mientras nos adentramos en la arqueología, la etnohistoria y la iconografía de dos sitios mayas famosos por su arte y su escultura, para entender el cosmos maya. Viernes: llegada a la Hacienda San Jose Cholul

18:00 horas: Los choferes de Catherwood lo llevan a la Hacienda San Jose Cholul, una edificación del siglo XVII, bellamente restaurada y habilitada como exclusivo hotel de gran lujo.

Esta tarde tendremos una plática introductoria con nuestro guía arqueólogo.

Sábado: Ek Balam y cenote Xchen

AM : Vamos a explorar esta magnífica ciudad amurallada poco conocida, pero sin duda grandiosa, y a escalar la estructura cubierta de figuras de estuco que remata su pirámide. La magnífica calidad artística que distingue esta estructura quiso conservarse para la eternidad cuando fue enterrada por los antiguos mayas a fin de proteger la tumba que resguarda en su interior. En Ek Balam hay una rica mezcla de estilos arquitectónicos que evidencian las relaciones que la Península de Yucatán sostuvo con otras regiones. El arte de estuco que se encuentra en Ek Balam ilustra en un hermoso estilo el tema que nos ocupa. La abundancia de aves es otro gran atractivo de esta visita.

HORA DE LA COMIDA /PM: Nos detendremos a comer a cielo abierto, bajo el tupido follaje del árbol que, cual vigía imperturbable, resguarda la entrada del cenote Xchen. Los sorprendentes sabores de la cocina yucateca se distinguen aquí por el refinado servicio característico de Catherwood.

Después de explorar esta entrada al inframundo maya, dedicaremos el resto de la tarde a sumergirnos en las aguas cristalinas del cenote Xchen y disfrutar de su frescura, a dar un paseo (desde la torre de observación se tiene una vista fantástica), o a descansar simplemente en una hamaca, entregados a la tranquilidad de esta hermosa propiedad de Catherwood, exclusiva para sus viajeros

Domingo: Chichén Itzá

AM : Salimos de la Hacienda San José Cholul para dirigirnos al sitio arqueológico más celebrado, —y quizás uno de los más complejos— del mundo prehispánico. Construido por los

mayas, conquistado por los itzáes primero y después por los toltecas, fue finalmente derrocado por el príncipe de Mayapán.

Visitamos El Castillo, célebre pirámide que fue recientemente declarada como una de las Nuevas Siete Maravillas del Mundo. Visitamos también otras importantes construcciones de este sitio y el Cenote Sagrado, donde se han encontrado ofrendas asociadas a sacrificios rituales. Las elaboradas esculturas encontradas en el sitio son una rica muestra de la representación simbólica del universo maya. Aprenderemos a distinguir los símbolos más comunes y empezaremos a interpretar el mensaje que los antiguos mayas nos legaron.

HORA DE LA COMIDA : Degustamos una deliciosa comida en un restaurante de Izamal.

PM: La tarde se dedica a recorrer la enigmática ciudad de Izamal, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Prácticamente todas las construcciones del centro están pintadas de amarillo, lo que le da al barrio un carácter particular. Los guías expertos de Catherwood lo llevan a los principales lugares de interés, y le explican la misteriosa convivencia de las culturas prehispánica, colonial y contemporánea, ahí donde el plano de la espiritualidad está particularmente presente. Al final del tour, nos espera el vehículo que nos traslada al Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de Mérida.

A través de los años, los edificios han moldeado y definido la vida de la gente en las diferentes culturas del mundo entero. Únase a Catherwood Travels en una exploración de la arquitectura yucateca, empezando con los antiguos mayas y continuando hacia la época de las haciendas. Descubra cómo el pueblo maya creó su paisaje con su peculiar arquitectura, y cómo se sirvió de ella para comunicarse con los demás y con sus dioses. Explore las zonas arqueológicas y las haciendas que se edificaron sobre los antiguos edificios mayas y muchas veces con las piedras sagradas de estos sitios.

Sábado: Uxmal y Kabah, Xocnaceh

AM: Hoy salimos de la suntuosa Hacienda Temozón para dirigirnos a Uxmal, el sitio arqueológico más extenso de la región Puuc, cuyos principales edificios se alinean conforme a los astros. Visitamos, entre otros edificios, la Pirámide del Adivino y el Palacio del Gobernador, dos de las más bellas estructuras del mundo prehispánico. De ahí nos trasladamos a Kabah, sitio que le sigue en extensión, donde visitamos otros bellos ejemplares del estilo Puuc, como el Codz-poop, así llamado por la trompa que sirve de escalón y que conduce simbólicamente a las entrañas de la tierra.

HORA DE LA COMIDA : Una deliciosa comida al estilo Catherwood nos espera en los espectaculares vestigios de la capilla de Xocnaceh, una hacienda privada que abre sus puertas en exclusiva a los viajeros de Catherwood. Ahí podemos nadar en el tanque de riego, hoy convertido en alberca, o bien explorar el sitio arqueológico.

Domingo: tour de Haciendas

AM : Después del desayuno, visitamos la Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, una de las pocas haciendas que aún producen fibra de henequén, también llamada “oro verde” en alusión a la riqueza que representó entre 1880 y 1920. En esta visita, exploramos su producción desde la siembra del agave hasta su cosecha, así como los procesos de limpieza, desecación e hilado. No olvide traer traje de baño, pues el cenote de la hacienda es ideal para refrescarse.

HORA DE LA COMIDA : Una deliciosa comida yucateca lo espera en la Hacienda Itzincab Cámara o en la Hacienda Tekik de Regil, dos propiedades bellamente restauradas, de acceso exclusivo para los viajeros de Catherwood.

10 Conversando con las aves… en Maya

Al compartir su conocimiento sobre la impresionante variedad de pájaros de Yucatán - alrededor de 550 especies han sido registradas, lo que representa un 50% de todas las aves de México- la experta Barbara MacKinnon ha ocasionado un renovado sentimiento de orgullo a los jardineros Mayas de las Haciendas. "He visto cómo las aves han cambiado vidas" - dice Barbara. No solo han traído beneficios económicos a sus familias, pero han iniciado una nueva generación de conservacionistas y enriquecido las experiencias de sus visitantes.

09 CAMPAMENTO DE VERANO EN TEKIK – Creando oportunidades para los niños Mayas

Por primera vez, más de 550 niños de las comunidades rurales Mayas disfrutaron, de la mano de profesores especializados, actividades enfocadas en diversas herramientas de vida como trabajo en equipo, sensibilidad artística, deportes y entrenamiento financiero.

Además de ejercitar el cuerpo y la mente, aprendieron prácticas responsables que les ayudarán a lo largo de su vida.

08 KIUIC FASCINANTE– Arqueología privada

Kiuic, un sitio Maya en las remotas colinas del área Puuc, es uno de los tesoros escondidos más fascinantes de la región. Guiados por el veterano arqueólogo Tomas Gallareta, descubrimos un mundo imponente de inesperada complejidad y misterio.

Este sitio es parte de una Reserva Bio Cultural protegida y constantemente alberga grupos de estudiantes de todo el mundo. Para aquellos que no son estudiantes, ya organizamos visitas limitadas a 25 personas para preservar el sitio .

07 NADO CON EL TIBURÓN BALLENA– Experiencia en las profundidades

No hay nada como verlas por primera vez. Son los peces más grandes que existen y su presencia impone. Imagine un pez de 7 a 10 metros de largo con una piel con hermosas hermosas que asemejan la piel de un leopardo. Ahora imagine nadar a su lado y por debajo. Después de un rato, el cuerpo se adapta a sus ritmos, patrones e incluso a sus vibraciones. Quizá desee comenzar a planear sus vacaciones, después de todo esta es una aventura que puede hacerse únicamente de Junio a Septiembre.

05 LIBERANDO TORTUGAS – Dándole una mano a la naturaleza

La tortuga Carey hembra llega a la costa a anidar por las noches de Abril a Junio. Cada año deja 100 huevos en un agujero que excava por sus pequeñas patas traseras durante 2 horas. Dos meses después, las crías de tortuga brotan de los huevos y es aquí cuando los humanos tienen la oportunidad darle una mano a la naturaleza.

Las pequeñas tortugas tienen solamente entre 0.07% y 1% de probabilidades de sobrevivir, por los animales depredadores.

04 LA VIDA EN ROSA – El color de la naturaleza

Al adentrarnos más y más en la laguna, comenzamos a preguntarnos: es el rosado lleno de vida? es el frágil ecosistema que representa?

La realidad es que hay algo especial con el flamingo.

Celestún no es solamente el santuario de flamingos rosados más grande del Caribe - dependiendo del mes, alberga entre 10000 y 18000 especies- es un espectáculo natural sin igual en el Hemiferio Occidental, del que estamos agradecidos de ser testigos una y otra vez.

03 DESCUBRIENDO EL INFRAMUNDO -Los secretos de los cenotes

Considerados lugares sagrados por los Mayas, los cenotes continúan revelando sus misterios poco a poco.

El pasado Noviembre, cuatro cráneos y mandíbulas de una especie de oso que desapareció hace 11,300 años, fueron hallados en el fondo de un cenote en Yucatán. ¡Los únicos especímenes de su tipo descubiertos hasta ahora en esta región!

El descubrimiento fue hecho por el arqueólogo subacuático Guillermo de Anda y su equipo, quien en 2011 estará dirigiendo un taller de viaje de buceo en cenotes con Catherwood Travels!

10 COMMUNING WITH THE BIRDS… In Maya

By sharing her knowledge of the Yucatan’s incredible bird variety – some 550 bird species have been registered, which represents 50% of all the birds in Mexico – bird expert Barbara MacKinnon brought economic growth and renewed sense of pride to the Maya gardeners at The Haciendas. “I’ve seen how birds have changed lives” – says Barbara. Not only have they brought economic benefits to numerous families, but they’ve served as the basis for a new generation of conservationists and enrich visitor experiences as well.

09 TEKIK DE REGIL SUMMER CAMP – Creating opportunities for Maya children

For the first time, more than 550 children from Mayan rural communities enjoyed multiple weeks of half-day outdoor activities, led by specialized teachers who focused on life skills including teamwork, artistic sensibility, sports and personal finance training.

As the kids exercised their bodies and minds they learned practical responses to the challenges they face in their daily lives.

08 FASCINATING KIUIC – Private archeology view

Kiuic, a Maya site in the Yucatan’s remote Puuc hills is one of the region’s most impressive hidden gems. Led by veteran archaeologist Tomas Gallareta, we discovered a world of imposing urbanity, unexpected complexity, and not a little mystery.

The site is part of a protected Bio Cultural Reserve and houses rotating groups of students from all over the world. For non-students, we are now arranging visits limited to a minimum-impact 25.

07 SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS – A deeper adventure

There’s nothing like seeing them for the first time. They’re the biggest fish on earth (that’s the shark part), but there’s also a lot of whale. Imagine a fish that’s 25 or 30 feet long, with a beautiful spotted pattern like a leopard. Now imagine swimming both beside and above them. After a while, you adapt to the sharks’ rhythms, patterns and even vibe. You might want to start planning your trip as this is a seasoned adventure that goes on from June to September.

This is a 2010 experience we’re definitely living again in 2011!

06 THE HACIENDAS DOING IT ALL – And keeping it real!

In 2010, The Haciendas have not only received the prestigious Silver Bronze Certificate from the Earth Check but also have been acknowledged by Travel + Leisure magazine with the award Global Vision labor of rescue and preservation of their colonial buildings as well as the fostering of the Mayan country-side communities in the area. The reconstruction of these five colonial states has ended up revitalizing entire areas of rural Mexico and has inspired a wave of community-focused tourism.

05 RELEASING BABY TURTLES – Giving Nature a hand

A female Carey sea turtle arrives ashore at her nesting beach at night in the months from April to June. Every year she drops about 100 eggs into a hole that she has excavated with her back legs over about 2 hours.

Two months later the babies break free from their eggs and humans have a chance to give nature a hand. A very useful hand. This species is seriously endangered and threatened. They only have between 0.07% and 1% chances of survival, because of predatory animals.

As guests of our partner Eco Paraiso hotel, we got to carry them from the nest to the beach, so they can start their journey to the deep Sea.

04 LIFE IN PINK – THE COLOR OF NATURE

As we advanced further down the lagoon, we started wondering: Is it the bright pink color? Is it the fragile ecosystem it represents?

The truth is there’s just something about the flamingo.

03 UNDERWORLD DISCOVERIES – The secrets of the cenotes

Considered sacred places by the Mayans, the cenotes still continue to reveal their mysteries little by little.

Last November, four complete skulls and jaws of an extinct species of bear that disappeared 11,300 years ago were found in the bed of a cenote in the Yucatan - the only specimens of their type found until now in this region of the country!

The discovery was made by underwater archaeologist Guillermo de Anda and his team, who in 2011 will be leading a cenote diving study tour for Catherwood Travels!

A lifetime of enchantment: Izamal and its hidden treasures

When you think about Izamal, you visualize the yellow city and its imposing convent. Yet most visitors (and some locals) have very little idea of the wonders and mysteries the city hides.

That magnificent convent, of course, is one of Izamal's wonders. It features one of the most extraordinary central courtyards of any church in the world. But Izamal hides numerous other treasures that got beyond what meets the eye.

Izamal fascinated me from my first visit. Yet though I've been going there for fifteen years, I have to admit it took a little while for me to realize just how unusual and exceptional the town really was. Yes, it always felt mysterious and strange, but I never quite knew why.

In Izamal, the past and the present coexist just as they do in Rome. Everyday activities play out beneath pyramids and ancient ruins spread all over the city. Locals jog at the Itzamatul ruins or take their girlfriends for a romantic walk at Kinich Kakmo Pyramid the same way Romans run in the Forum, or stroll about the Baths of Caracalla.

In fact, in Izamal you'll find pyramids around the corner from the tortilleria, across from the local market, and in the back yards of almost every house on the town plaza. There's even one in the Folk Art Museum's courtyard. It sounds surreal, and it feel surreal, too.

Izamal is the only place in the Yucatan where there's a pyramid no matter where you look. There are more than 140, all integrated into the contemporary town, where 30,000 descendants of the ancient Maya see this as no more than a part of daily life.

Along Izamal's magical and vibrant yellow streets, visitors encounter grand old homes and colonial façades, with curious details carved into their portals and doors. It's a real, fascinating town, with local markets and colorful, authentic stores that still serve the non-touristy, day-to-day needs and tastes of the locals (even if they are a delight to visitors).

As you wander around town, it's easy to meet Izamal's master craftsmen. Take a horse-drawn carriage and follow the route that leads to their homes and workshops.
Don Felix, a local medicine man, has a lifelong history of healing with plants, hisgrandfather was a healer and passed his profession on to him, starting when he was nine. At Don Felix's place, you'll find a Maya herbal apothecary, the family-tended herb harden and -why ask why- piñatas at certain times of the year. Done Felix's wife runs an embroidery workshop as well, and sells exquisite dresses, blouses and guayaberas.

Jeweler Don Estevan, a character if there ever was one, takes great pride in his work -and his life story is unique and moving as his most precious jewels. He frequently sings to visitors as he takes them around the workshop and explains his creative process. You can tell he loves every aspect of his work.

Gabriel, a young wood carver, more timid and shy, has a very gifted hand. His sculptures add real life to the wood that is his raw material.

To get a deeper appreciation of Mexican handicrafts, head to Izamal's beautiful Centro Cultural y Artesanal museum and cultural center. A limeade on the museum's tranquil patio is a great break from the heat.

Dr. Julia Miller is an archaeologist with more than 20 years' experience in Mesoamerica. She started her work in non-Maya areas of Honduras and then moved to Copan (Honduras), Xunantunich (Belize), and Palenque (Mexico) while completing her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania (2008). Her specialty is ancient Maya architecture. At Palenque, she participated in renowned discoveries like the Stucco Panel, the Carved Stone Panel and Throne, and the Tomb of the Murals. Her exceptional knowledge of both ancient and modern Maya culture is key to her development of new destinations and experiences for travelers to the Maya world.

ALFONSO MORALES is an archaeologist with more than 30 years' experience in Maya studies. He started as an assistant to Merle Greene Robertson recording art at Palenque, and went on to receive his MA at The University of Texas, Austin, in 1998. He has excavated at Copan (Honduras), Caracol (Belize), and most recently was Principal Investigator for the Grupo de las Cruces project at Palenque (Mexico). During the Palenque excavations, the team found spectacular painted stucco and carved stone panels, the Temple XIX Carved Stone Throne, and Temple XX's Tomb of the Murals. Alfonso is also a federally licensed expert tour guide, with over 30 years' experience leading groups to Maya sites as well as on other historical and ecological expeditions in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.

Usil: un viaje al inframundo Maya

Nuestro arqueólogo Alfonso Morales, se lanzó a la aventura a descubrir una de las cuevas que forman parte del inframundo Maya.

Aktún Usil (Lugar donde se ve el soplido de la pintura) es un sitio poco visitado, ideal para explorar y estratégicamente ubicado a solo dos kilómetros de la zona arqueológica de Oxkintok y las grutas de Calcehtok.

Usil: acceso al Inframundo Maya

Esta es una de las cuevas más interesantes en la región sur de Yucatán y está resguardada por un miembro de la comunidad ejidal quien también funge como guía del lugar.

Fue descubierto por cuatro ejidatarios del lugar y se encuentra en el municipio de Maxcanú. El acceso es fácil para los exploradores.
El techo es de la primera bóveda es simplemente impresionante, tiene una altura aproximada de doce metros y está lleno de pinturas de símbolos mayas – ranas, tortugas, en honor a Chac, el dios de la lluvia, así como jeroglíficos y números. Es difícil asignar un período en la historia – por su sencillez pueden ser elementos tempranos como del Posclásico -.

Alfonso nos cuenta: "Por la posición de estos elementos en la cúpula, tenemos la sensación de que estamos osbervando un cosmograma creado por los antiguos habitantes de origen Maya"

En la segunda parte del recorrido se observan restos de cerámicas, huellas de animales e incluso piedras labradas. Se tiene una mejor iluminación gracias a unas aperturas en el cielo de la cueva por donde bajan unas bellas raíces. En este lugar, en los muros y piedras encontramos elementos iconográficos difíciles de reconocer pero claramente se ven figuras de animales.

La parte más emocionante se encuentra justo al entrar a la tercera bóveda y ver unas manos “sopladas” en el techo, mismas que dan nombre al lugar.Las maravillas que el sitio encierra se resume en las palabras de Alfonso: "Es posible que en las diferentes épocas del año, en los lugares que se proyecta la luz solar desde el lado este, la localización de los grabados en piedra pueda coincidir con una alineación solar en momentos importantes para la astronomía y una relación a las fechas asociadas con la agricultura".

Cobá, un sitio arqueológico fascinante

Cuando entramos en contacto con la gente de la comunidad de la Laguna Chabela, ubicada a un paso del sitio arqueológico de Cobá, tenían más de un año intentando hacer de sus tierras ejidales –que albergan tres hermosas lagunas– un lugar atractivo para el turismo.

Los ejidatarios son todos descendientes de los mayas que ocuparon antiguamente la región y construyeron las ciudades cuyos vestigios hoy nos llenan de asombro.

Una travesía llena de aventura

El gran potencial del lugar para realizar un proyecto turístico de bajo impacto ambiental era evidente, de modo que nos propusimos de inmediato acompañarlos asesorándolos en el diseño –empleando un modelo ecológico que se sirve de los materiales de la región– y en el entrenamiento del personal.

La comunidad nos ha sorprendido por su determinación; no es gente que se dé por vencida. Quienes están participando en el proyecto trabajan de lunes a sábado en sus labores habituales, y dedican sólo el domingo al proyecto. La semana pasada –unos doce meses después de haber entrado en contacto–, los visitamos para ver el avance de las obras de infraestructura y continuar con nuestra asesoría. Nos encontramos con que están por concluir la fase de construcción de la infraestructura: una gran champa en la entrada, sanitarios y vestidores, un muelle y una mesa. Dado semejante progreso, optamos por comenzar la fase de entrenamiento para el montaje y el servicio.

La comunidad maya de Laguna Chabela

Esta comunidad está comprometida y trabajando duramente para empezar a recibir viajeros a partir de la temporada de invierno. En Catherwood nos sentimos entusiasmados y orgullosos al poder sumar un servicio más en el que una comunidad maya se beneficia directamente con la visita de nuestros viajeros.

A Wonderful Summer Camp! Un Campamento de Verano Maravilloso!

CONGRATULATIONS TO FUNDACION ANDAR! This 100% mexican foundation succesfully finished for a second consecutive year a summercamp in the Mayan rural communities of Yucatan, benefiting more than 500 children!

One of this summer camps took place in Hacienda Tekik de Regil, a private property member of Catherwood's collection. The mission? To educate in order to reduce the enormous disparity between the opportunities available to the rich and the poor respectively in the children of Mexico. The result? More than 150 kids played, had fun and gained a learning opportunity!
The summer camp focused its support in four sectors: health, education, sport and social development. With the help of a talented staff who donated their time, skills and good will; the summer camp was a total success and we are already looking forward to support the 2011 edition.
